{\noindent Dear Mrs Brown:}
I am very sorry to hear that your request of September 22nd has not been
honored and that you have not received the additional information promised
by David Fuchs. Unfortunately, there has been a very bad mix-up in our
handling of such requests. I am looking into the matter and I am
informing Don Knuth of the situation.
The information on the new WEB system is immediately available and so,
under separate cover, we are sending you: 1) The December 1981 preliminary
draft of ``The WEB System of Structured Documentation'' by Donald E.
Knuth, and 2) A 9-bit non-labeled magnetic tape written in ascii at 1600
bpi, lrcl 133, blksize 7980, recfm FBA, containing the following files:
TANGLE.PAS, TANGLE.WEB, WEAVE.WEB, WEBHDR.TEX, and BASIC.TEX.
The hard-copy report was written in WEB and prepared for printing through
the use of the WEAVE program. TANGLE and WEAVE are reasonably
system independent but some dependencies still remain. The modules that
may require attention are listed in the indices on page 103 and page 170
under ``system dependencies''. Appendix G, on page 176, outlines the
procedure that may be necessary to install the WEB system on your
computer.
TANGLE.PAS is in upper case, broken into lines not exceeding 72 characters
per line at PASCAL-acceptable places. The only concession to readability
is that the breaks are made after semicolons when this is possible.
WEBHDR.TEX contains specific formatting information needed by TEX to
process the output from WEAVE.
Thank you for your \$25 check. It will not be worth the mailing charges
to return the tape to us but perhaps you might hold it for mailing to
someone else in England should we get such a request. I shall see that
action is taken regarding the rest of your request.
